BoJ Policy Narrative Falls Flat for Japanese Yen
The Japanese yen has been largely unaffected by recent policy changes from the Bank of Japan (BoJ), according to an analysis by ING. Despite the BoJ's shift away from ultra-loose monetary policy, the yen has not gained significant traction.
The BoJ's policy adjustments, including yield curve control tweaks and rate hikes, have been widely anticipated and priced in by the market, limiting their impact on the currency. Instead, the yen's valuation is driven by interest rate differentials between Japan and other major economies, particularly the United States.
The Federal Reserve's decision to maintain higher rates has kept the dollar-yen pair supported, undermining the BoJ's efforts to strengthen the yen. Unless the Fed signals a more aggressive easing cycle or global risk sentiment shifts dramatically, the yen may struggle to appreciate significantly.
