BOJ Policymakers Push for Faster Rate Hikes Amid Inflation Concerns
The Bank of Japan (BOJ) raised interest rates to a 31-year high in September, and now some policymakers are calling for further rate hikes. According to a summary of opinions from the September meeting, several BOJ officials believe that there is a need to accelerate the pace of interest rate increases or move them closer to the central bank's goal soon.
The BOJ raised interest rates in September to 0.5% after keeping them at zero for over two years. The decision was seen as a surprise and marked a significant shift in monetary policy. Now, some policymakers are urging further rate hikes to combat inflationary pressure building in the economy.
One member of the BOJ suggested that if signs of an upward deviation in prices appear, the Bank would need to quicken the pace of rate hikes. Another opinion held that bringing the policy interest rate closer to the approximate goal relatively soon would be desirable, giving the Bank room to respond to unexpected economic developments.
