BoJ Rate Hike Fails to Impress Yen Bulls as USD/JPY Hits Two-Week High
The Japanese Yen (JPY) has struggled to hold its ground against the US Dollar (USD), dropping to a two-week low after comments from Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda. The BoJ raised interest rates by 25 basis points to 1.25% in a split vote, with two dissenting members arguing for patience in pushing up borrowing costs.
The rate hike was accompanied by data showing that Japan's National Consumer Price Index (CPI) held steady in August and core inflation remained below the BoJ's 2% annual target. This tempered expectations of further tightening, undermining the JPY and supporting the USD/JPY pair.
Analysts at ING note that the BoJ's path toward further tightening remains contested, citing the dissenting views as a potential hurdle for future rate increases.
