BoJ Rate Hike May Spark Yen Surge Amid Fed Dithering

Nomura Securities' chief macro strategist Naka Matsuzawa is asking if we are in a 'Goldilocks moment', referring to the implications of a potential divergence between central bank policies. This could lead to a weaker U.S. dollar and a stronger yen, with a possible rate hike by the Bank of Japan (BoJ) while the Federal Reserve (Fed) keeps interest rates steady.

The BoJ is likely to raise rates on September 17-18, driven by the recent wage report showing real wages rose 2.4%, the largest increase since May 2021. The BoJ demands consistent wage growth before acting on inflation and higher prices.

Nomura anticipates no rate hike at the Fed's meeting on September 15-16, with a 53% probability of a rate hike according to prediction market Kalshi. However, some analysts believe U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh may hike rates to prove his inflation-fighting chops.

A stronger yen would lead to an equity correction in Japan's major exporters, particularly those with high overseas sales. Conversely, domestic companies that make profits within Japan would benefit from lower costs on energy and imports.
