BOJ Rate Hike Prospects Strengthen as Japan Producer Prices Hold Steady

Japan's producer prices rose 7.2% in July from a year earlier, maintaining an elevated pace that supports the Bank of Japan's rationale for another interest rate hike.

The BOJ reported on August 12th that the July corporate goods price index (producer price index) increased by 0.1% month-over-month, but remains at a high level.

Categories such as petroleum and coal products, chemicals, and nonferrous metals led the advance in prices, driven by rising international oil prices amid Middle East conflict, higher nonferrous metal and machinery prices, and wage growth.

The BOJ's Governor Kazuo Ueda signaled the possibility of an additional rate hike as early as September due to inflation upside risks. The latest producer price data could serve as supporting evidence for such a move.
