BOJ Rate Hike Sends Japanese Yen Plummeting Amid Dovish Signals
The Japanese yen experienced a significant decline on Friday, rising by 0.7% to 157.13 yen in response to the Bank of Japan's interest rate hike.
Despite being largely priced into markets, with interest rate futures indicating a nearly 99% probability of the hike ahead of the decision, the move still managed to impact the currency.
The central bank raised its policy rate by 25 basis points to 1.25%, marking its highest level since 1995. However, two members of the BOJ's rate-setting board dissented from this decision, calling for a hold.
This dissent highlights growing tensions between Tokyo and the BOJ over accommodative financial conditions, with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's government advocating for an expansionary stance in stark contrast to the central bank's efforts to tighten monetary conditions and mitigate inflation risks.
