BoJ Rate Hike Sparks Dovish Tone, Volatility in USD/JPY
The Japanese Yen has been in focus following the Bank of Japan's policy meeting, where rates were raised by 25 basis points to 1.25%. According to MUFG's Michael Wan, the market interpreted this as a relatively dovish move. As a result, USD/JPY climbed from around 156 to above 158 before retreating below 157.
Wan notes that markets are now focused on ongoing intervention risk monitoring, with some signs suggesting the BoJ may be uncomfortable with the sharp rise in USD/JPY. He points out that news reports indicate the BoJ conducted a rate check during the New York session, which could indicate some concern over the currency's movement.
The market is now watching closely for any signs of intervention by the BoJ, particularly given the upcoming holiday period when liquidity for USD/JPY may be lower. This has led to increased volatility in the currency pair, making it a key focus for investors and traders.
