BOJ Readies Preemptive Rate Hikes Amid Rising Inflation Fears
The Bank of Japan's policymaking body has expressed its intention to continue raising policy interest rates in a preemptive move against potential upside risks. This decision was reflected in the minutes from their July meeting, where they acknowledged that underlying Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation is nearing 2% and financial conditions remain accommodative.
Members of the policymaking body emphasized the need for early action to prevent rapid hikes later on. They noted that the current interest rate remains below the neutral range, leaving room for further adjustments.
The timing of these adjustments will take into account various factors, including baseline outlooks, risks associated with Middle East tensions, AI demand, and foreign exchange moves. Policymakers also highlighted a shift from focusing on lifting inflation to anchoring it at 2%, warning that unchecked upside risks could harm the economy and necessitate sharper rate hikes.
