BOJ Set to Hike Rates Again, Marking Accelerated Pace
The Bank of Japan (BOJ) is expected to raise its policy interest rate from 1% to 1.25% at its Monetary Policy Meeting on January 17th, marking a rare accelerated hike just three months after the last increase.
This decision would come despite concerns that higher corporate borrowing costs and rising mortgage rates could cool the Japanese economy, leaving the BOJ facing a delicate balancing act between curbing inflation and supporting economic growth.
Rinto Maruyama, a strategist at SMBC Nikko Securities, believes that timely and appropriate rate increases are necessary to address upside risks to inflation, particularly with crude oil prices continuing to rise due to tensions in the Middle East.
