BOJ Sets Sights on Anchoring Inflation at 2%
The Bank of Japan's (BOJ) July monetary policy meeting minutes revealed that policymakers agreed to continue raising policy interest rates and gradually reduce monetary accommodation. The underlying Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation is approaching the 2% target, and broader financial conditions remain accommodative.
Several board members emphasized taking preemptive action against upside inflation risks to avoid sharper, more disruptive rate hikes later. One policymaker warned that tightening could accelerate if inflation risks intensify.
The BOJ's focus has shifted from elevating inflation to anchoring it at 2%, cautioning that delayed action could force 'double shocks' on the economy. Future rate adjustments will depend on the baseline economic outlook alongside external variables, including FX volatility, AI demand, and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
