BOJ Sounds Alarm Over Inflation Risks from Global AI Demand
The Bank of Japan has expressed alarm over mounting inflation risks in Japan, which it believes could be exacerbated by global demand for artificial intelligence (AI). According to its quarterly outlook report, the BOJ notes that while AI should ultimately boost productivity and put downward pressure on prices, the short-term effects of an AI-driven investment boom may outweigh these gains. The report states that producer prices have risen globally due in part to a positive global demand shock for AI-related goods.
The BOJ also examined the impact of higher interest rates on consumption, finding that Japanese households would benefit from higher borrowing costs due to their substantial financial assets and relatively modest debt. The bank raised interest rates to 1% in June and has signaled its readiness to continue pushing up borrowing costs to combat price pressures.
In its report, the BOJ notes that the spill-over effects of AI demand will remain in place for some time, coupled with lingering boosts to import costs from yen declines. This could keep persistent upward pressure on domestic inflation, according to the bank's estimates.
