BOJ Tankan: Large Manufacturers' Sentiment Improves to Plus 24
The Bank of Japan's Research and Statistics Department released its September 2026 Tankan survey on October 1, 2026. The survey showed that large manufacturers' sentiment improved to plus 24, a 2-point increase from June's reading. Large nonmanufacturers saw their DI fall to plus 35, down 2 points from the previous month.
The responding period for the survey ran from August 26 to September 30, 2026, with 9,104 enterprises sampled and a response rate of 99.4 percent. Among large manufacturers, 30 percent responded that business conditions were favorable, while 6 percent saw them as unfavorable. This resulted in a DI reading of plus 24 for the sector.
Looking ahead to December 2026, large manufacturers forecast sales growth of 21 percent year-on-year, with domestic sales up 5.9 percent and exports increasing by 10.3 percent. In contrast, large nonmanufacturers projected a 4.3 percent rise in sales for fiscal 2026.
