BoJ's Credibility on the Line as Yen Weakness Persists
The Japanese Yen (JPY) is facing renewed pressure as it weakens against the US Dollar, and markets are questioning the Bank of Japan's (BoJ) commitment to tighter policy. Commerzbank analyst Thu Lan Nguyen argues that the BoJ's latest rate hike failed to satisfy both domestic officials and international partners, and mere threats of foreign exchange intervention are seen as insufficient.
The BoJ risks losing credibility if it fails to back up its words with action, according to Nguyen. She warns that delayed or cautious tightening could ultimately undermine both Yen stability and economic growth.
The fundamental problem is the persistent uncertainty surrounding the BoJ's priorities, says Nguyen. The BoJ wants to prevent a further sharp depreciation of the yen, but achieving this would require a credible signal that additional rate hikes are on the table.
