BoJ’s Sato backs rate hikes but leaves timing unclear

Bank of Japan board member Naoko Sato has expressed support for further interest rate hikes, though she stopped short of specifying a timeline for the next move. In comments reported by Kyodo, Sato aligned with the central bank’s policy of raising rates gradually but cautioned about weakening personal consumption, which could complicate the timing of future hikes.

The message from Sato leans hawkish on the direction of monetary policy but remains cautious on execution. While higher rates could help control inflation, they also risk dampening household spending, a key concern for the BoJ. For yen traders, the endorsement of tighter policy provides a supportive signal, though the lack of clarity on timing leaves the market waiting for more concrete indicators.

The USDJPY pair has shown little reaction to Sato’s remarks, remaining confined within a narrow trading range. The day’s low reached 157.78, while the high hit 158.24, with the current price near 158.08. The 100- and 200-hour moving averages, at 157.84 and 157.75 respectively, serve as critical support levels. A sustained break below these could shift the technical bias toward sellers, while a move above resistance at 158.419 and 158.508 might open the door for further upside.

On the topside, key resistance is marked by the 50% midpoint of the decline from the July 23 high and the 200-day moving average. A break above these levels could target higher swing highs and the 100-day moving average. Meanwhile, support holds firm, keeping buyers in the game for now. Sato’s remarks provide a fundamental backdrop, but price action will ultimately determine the next move.
