Bond Rout Leaves Investors 'Nowhere to Hide' Amid Synchronized Global Repricing
The global bond market is experiencing a synchronized repricing of borrowing costs, leaving investors 'nowhere to hide,' according to Nigel Green, CEO of deVere Group. This means that investors can't simply rotate between regions to avoid losses as Europe, Asia, and the US are being affected together.
Green noted that when correlations snap together like this, diversification within bonds alone won't protect a portfolio. He warned that investors need to review their exposure and make sure they're not caught leaning in the wrong direction.
The price of Brent crude surged above $105 a barrel, and the 10-year US Treasury yield climbed to its highest level since 2007, reaching 4%. This led traders to see a greater than 75% chance of another Federal Reserve hike in October, up from around 49% a week ago.
The global bond market is experiencing a vicious circle where governments borrow more, yields rise, interest bills swell, and they borrow again. Green emphasized that now was the moment for investors to review their exposure and make sure they're not caught leaning in the wrong direction. He added that once risk-free rates sit above 5% in the world's largest economy, every asset on the planet has to justify its price against that.
