Bond Selloff Deepens Amid Rising Oil Prices and Inflation Concerns

Bond prices have continued to slide in Asia and Europe, pushing borrowing costs to multi-decade highs due to rising oil prices and concerns about inflation.

The confluence of factors has led to a surge in sovereign bond yields, with Japan's 10-year yield above 3% for the first time in 30 years. Germany's 10-year Bund yields are at their highest since 2011, while Britain's equivalent is at its highest since 2008.

State Street's head of macro strategy, Michael Metcalfe, attributed the selloff to a combination of rising energy prices and longer-term concerns about government debt. 'The narrative is also getting wrapped up with longer-term concerns about the fiscal path,' he said.

Bond vigilantes, investors who seek to impose fiscal discipline on governments by demanding higher compensation for holding bonds, are seen as a potential factor in the selloff. Ed Yardeni, president of Yardeni Research, warned that if US 10-year yields hit 5%, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent would issue more shorter-dated debt to calm markets.

Rising energy costs and hawkish comments from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh have also contributed to the selloff. Traders expect a European Central Bank rate increase next week, and there is about a 70% chance of a Fed hike the week after.
