Bond Yields Reach Highest Levels Since Crisis as Fed Bows to Market Pressure

The bond market has been moving upward in recent times, with the US 10-year yield reaching its highest sustained level since the Global Financial Crisis. This has led to a rise in long-dated government bonds, causing investors to demand higher yields as compensation for inflation uncertainty, fiscal risk, and the growing supply of debt.

According to John Authers, this is not necessarily a sign of an impending crisis, but rather a return to historical normality. The danger lies in the speed of any further rise, not just the level.

The Federal Reserve remains caught between hawkish and dovish views on inflation, with Chairman Kevin Warsh advocating for a September rate hike and Governor Chris Waller arguing that the labor market is no longer overheating. The Fed's decision will depend on the upcoming CPI report, which could tip the balance in favor of either side.

The old playbook of strong dollar and low interest rates is beginning to fracture, with emerging market currencies, local bonds, and commodity producers advancing despite rising US yields. This suggests that investors are no longer relying solely on the Fed's rate decisions to guide their investments.
