Bond Yields Soar to Decade Highs Amid Rising Debt and Inflation Fears
Long-term bond yields have surged to their highest levels in decades in major economies such as the US, Germany, Japan, and the UK. Investors are under pressure from rising government debt, inflation risks, geopolitical tensions, and the need for large loans to build AI infrastructure.
The yield on 30-year US government bonds has reached its highest level since 2007, while the 10-year Japanese bond yield has hit a three-decade high. In Germany, the 10-year bond yield is at its highest since 2011, and in France, it's at its highest since 2008.
The increase in yields has put pressure on other financial assets, with the Nasdaq and STOXX 600 Europe indices falling on August 18. Analysts point to rising government debt, low investor confidence, and unclear communication from central banks as contributing factors.
