BTC Price Stuck in Range as Fed Decision Looms, CoinShares Identifies Breakout Catalyst
Bitcoin's price has been stuck in a trading range as investors await the Federal Reserve's decision on interest rates. According to CoinShares, head of research James Butterfill notes that speeches from Fed chairman Kevin Warsh and governor Christopher Waller left different impressions about the possibility of a September rate hike.
Warsh's comments were seen as hawkish, with an emphasis on inflation rather than employment data, which led markets to price in a roughly two-thirds probability of a September rate hike. However, Waller pushed back against this interpretation, citing recent inflation data that show encouraging signs of disinflation.
The CME FedWatch Tool estimates a 60.4% chance that the Fed will hike the federal funds target rate by 25 basis points at next week's FOMC meeting. Butterfill believes two factors could drive Bitcoin higher: a resolution to the Iran conflict or a further deterioration in confidence in US sovereign debt.
He notes that until one of these events occurs, range trading is likely to continue. The August inflation print and the September FOMC meeting are seen as key dates for resolving the uncertainty surrounding interest rates.
