Bullock's High-Stakes Interest Rate Revolution Rocks Australia
Since taking over as Reserve Bank governor in October 2023, Michele Bullock has revolutionized how interest rates are set in Australia. In her first press conference on February 6, 2024, she marked a critical turning point in the bank's communication with the public, warning that they were 'not ruling in or out anything' and explaining the damage caused by inflation.
During her 22 press conferences, Bullock has answered almost 600 questions, speaking directly to millions of borrowers, investors, business operators, and people with savings. She has used a variation of the phrase 'inflation is bad' at least 21 occasions, emphasizing that it's not good for anyone.
Until her press conferences began, the bank's communication could only be described as cryptic, with decades passing without even telling the public if official interest rates had been changed. Bullock has proven to have a sense of mischief, discussing Taylor Swift's high-priced Eras Tour tickets as an example of latent inflationary pressures.
As she entered her third year in charge, Bullock confirmed that the bank was cutting official interest rates by a quarter percentage point in February 2025. However, she cautioned that they could not declare victory on inflation just yet. The move was seen as recognition that inflation pressures had eased and wages growth was moderating.
Since then, Bullock has faced numerous challenges, including the global economic uncertainty caused by Donald Trump's 'liberation day tariffs.' She has repeatedly emphasized the unpredictability of the situation, stating that it's not just uncertain but also unpredictable.
