Bullock's Rate Revolution: Transparency and Uncertainty
Reserve Bank Governor Michele Bullock has led a revolution in how interest rates are set in Australia, answering almost 600 questions from journalists and speaking directly to millions of borrowers, investors, business operators, and people with savings.
Bullock's tenure began on February 6, 2024, when she faced her first press conference as RBA governor. Since then, she has held 22 press conferences, totaling over 150,000 words, and used the term 'not ruling in or out anything' 11 times.
The bank's communication had improved under previous governors, but Bullock's approach was a significant shift. Her first press conference marked the start of the RBA's 'hold phase,' during which economists and media tried to understand her view on inflation and the economy.
Bullock used phrases like 'inflation is bad' at least 21 times, often adding that it hurts all Australians. She also discussed Taylor Swift's high-priced Eras Tour tickets as a sign of latent inflationary pressures and noted that commentators showed overconfidence in their predictions.
