New UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham inherits one of the strongest economic backdrops in recent history. According to analysis by Public First and Prosperity Alliance, only Tony Blair and Theresa May came to power with a better economy. The study measured key indicators such as GDP growth, inflation, unemployment, borrowing, and real wage growth.

The current inflation rate is 2.8%, down from its peak of 11% in 2022 but still above the Bank of England's target of 2%. However, forecasts predict that inflation will meet this target by Burnham's first year, matching the rate under Blair and ranking Burnham second among prime ministers.

Burnham also faces a challenge with unemployment expected to fall by half a percentage point in his first year. The Office for National Statistics reports 1.1 million young people aged 16-24 are not in education, employment, or training, the highest figure since 2013.
