Burnham Pushes Back Against Market Skepticism Over Spending Cuts

Andy Burnham has pushed back against claims that his economic plans are too focused on taxation, saying he is prepared to make difficult decisions on spending. The UK Prime Minister was responding to comments from former Bank of England chief economist Andy Haldane, who said financial markets have grown wary of Burnham's willingness to cut public expenditure.

Haldane stated that investors now consider the government a 'traditional tax and spend socialist government' with better social media presence. He urged Burnham not to raise taxes further and instead make reductions in public spending, citing the government's inability to cut public spending as its fiscal Achilles heel.

Burnham has recommitted to his party's manifesto promises, which include not raising main rates of income tax, VAT, or National Insurance. He also pledged to stick to the previous government's debt and spending targets, which will be made harder by recent increases in the cost of servicing the UK's existing debt.

The Prime Minister has committed around £1.8bn towards cost of living interventions, some of which is funded by reallocating money within existing budgets. However, a proposal to fund a VAT cut on household electricity bills using digital ID programme funds drew criticism from a Starmer ally.
