Burnham Sows Seeds of 'Breturn', Boosting Hopes for Sterling Assets
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham's recent comments on re-engaging with the European Union have sparked excitement in markets. The idea of 'Breturn', or Britain returning to the EU, has been floated as a possibility, which could boost sterling assets.
Burnham, who campaigned for the UK to remain in the EU during the 2016 Brexit referendum, stated that all options for Britain's long-term relationship with European partners would be on the table. This includes closer relations, rejoining the EU single market, or even applying for full membership again.
The UK cannot make this decision alone, however. EU governments have shown little appetite for reopening accession talks, and domestic opposition remains strong. Any transition process could take many years and come with significant costs.
Despite these challenges, Burnham's comments have been welcomed by some economists, who argue that the negative impact of Brexit on the UK economy has been substantial. A YouGov poll found that 55% of respondents believed Brexit was a 'wrong turn', while another poll showed 55% in favor of rejoining the EU.
