Burnham Vows Tough Decisions as UK Inflation Hits 3.1 Percent
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has pledged to make difficult economic decisions ahead of the October 28 spending statement, as official data released Wednesday showed inflation rose to 3.1 percent in August.
The price surge was driven by a 23 percent jump in motor fuel costs, with petrol prices rising by 9.1p to 161.3p a litre and diesel increasing by 14.2p to 181.8p a litre.
Former Bank of England chief economist Andy Haldane criticized the government's spending habits, warning that financial markets viewed it as a traditional high-spending administration hesitant to cut public expenditure.
Burnham rejected Haldane's comments, insisting that his administration would take difficult decisions to manage the public finances responsibly and protect long-term economic stability.
