Burnham's Spending Plans Put Pound on High Alert
The British pound stabilised on Monday due to higher oil prices driving UK gilt yields higher and attracting international demand for yield-seeking investors.
However, sellers are on standby, ready to act if Prime Minister Andy Burnham's speech at the Labour Party conference contains any missteps in his spending plans.
Burnham is expected to outline his proposals to tackle rising youth unemployment and reform the social care system, which will require significant funding from elsewhere, higher taxes, or additional borrowing.
Richard Carter, Head of Fixed Interest Research at Quilter Cheviot, notes that Burnham's desire for fiscal discipline may be compromised unless growth prospects suddenly change.
The UK is already facing a challenging time in terms of debt issuance, as the cost of government borrowing surges globally due to governments struggling to rein in spending and the Middle East crisis exacerbating the situation.
