Canada Courts Private Investment for Major Airports Amid Trade War
Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that his government will seek private investment through long-term concessions to operate the country's four largest airports. The move aims to boost the economy, which is facing a trade war with the United States. The airports in question are located in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, and Vancouver.
The Liberal government has been exploring ways to increase investment in airports for over a year. Now, Carney says that the country will 'retain ownership of the underlying land and assets' while bringing in new capital and expertise to unlock their true value.
Carney made this announcement during an investor summit in Toronto, where dozens of global investors are being courted to invest in over 160 projects crucial for Canada's economic growth. Two asset managers told Reuters that they would be interested in investing in airports, although Canadian labor groups have expressed opposition, arguing that privatization would raise costs for travelers.
