Canada Diversifies Economy Amid US Trade Tensions
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is taking steps to reduce Canada's dependence on the United States, following nearly four decades of economic integration. In a recent speech, Carney emphasized that countries need economic strength to maintain their sovereignty and avoid being dictated by one power.
The shift in approach comes after President Donald Trump imposed tariffs and threatened Canadian sovereignty, while seeking to pull Canadian industrial production south. Carney has instead turned to the European Union as an alternative partner, aiming to double non-U.S. trade over the next decade.
Carney's push for a more diversified economy is backed by Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne, who stated that 'the most sought-after commodity today is trust.' The country aims to offer stability and reliability to global investors, in contrast to Trump's America, which uses tariffs and uncertainty as leverage.
