Canada Faces Challenges in Pivot Away from US Trade
A potential pivot from the US to South Africa and Canada as trade partners faces significant challenges. Despite efforts by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to engage in talks with various countries, including South Africa, a shift away from the US may be economically and politically difficult.
Jen Hassum, executive director of the Broadbent Institute, notes that Canada has historic ties with South Africa and that there is potential for cooperation. However, Hassum also warns against one-sided trade agreements, saying 'it's not just allowing Canadian companies to enter the South African market only to act like mini-Trumps.'
The US-Canada-Mexico trade network plays a significant role in Canada's economy, with $1.3-trillion worth of US goods crossing the border annually. Hassum points out that 80% of Canadian exports cross the border, mostly produced by US or multinational companies.
