Canada Falls Behind Every US State in GDP Per Capita Ranking
Canada's GDP per capita in 2025 was lower than that of every U.S. state, according to recent data from the World Bank and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.
The World Bank's figures show Canada's 2025 GDP per capita at US$55,697.7, measured in current U.S. dollars.
Mississippi, the lowest-ranked state, had a GDP of approximately US$55,877 per person, making it only slightly higher than Canada's figure.
The difference between the two is less than 0.3%, which may not be as significant as the headline suggests.
The comparison also needs to take into account that the World Bank figures are converted into U.S. dollars, which can be affected by fluctuations in the Canadian dollar's exchange rate.
Purchasing-power parity (PPP) measures can provide a more accurate international comparison, with Canada's 2025 GDP per capita at $66,745.8 in current international dollars.
However, even after adjusting for PPP differences, the U.S.'s nominal GDP per capita remains about 35% higher than Canada's.
