Canada Fast-Tracks Oil Pipeline to Diversify Economy Away from US
Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced plans to fast-track the approval process for a new crude oil export pipeline, known as the Pacific Link pipeline. This project aims to diversify Canada's economy and reduce its reliance on the US market.
The pipeline is expected to generate over C$20 billion in GDP per year and create 140,000 jobs. It will also unlock potential government revenue of C$100 billion by 2060, according to Ottawa.
Carney stated that a pipeline to the west coast is part of Canada's mission to double non-US exports within the next decade and establish itself as a global energy superpower.
The project faces significant costs, with estimates ranging from C$35.2 billion to C$43.7 billion. The majority owners will be the federal government and the government of Alberta, with Indigenous communities offered at least 10% ownership interest.
