Canada Forms Coalition to Champion Infrastructure Economy Amid $237 Billion Repair Backlog
A new coalition of nine national organizations has launched in Canada to promote the country's infrastructure economy. The Canadian Infrastructure Report Card (CIRC) Coalition consists of local governments, engineers, builders, transit systems, asset managers, parks and recreation leaders, public works professionals, and municipal water sector representatives.
The coalition is urging the federal government to increase long-term, predictable infrastructure funding to close the current infrastructure deficit and address immediate needs. They also want the government to address workforce shortage gaps by providing employment pathways for youth and post-secondary education.
According to a 2019 report card, approximately $237 billion in backlog repair costs exist due to 11% of core public infrastructure being rated in poor or very poor condition. The upcoming edition of the Canadian Infrastructure Report Card is expected to provide a renewed national picture of Canada's local infrastructure needs.
