Canada Hopes to Emerge Stronger from Trade War with US
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated that Canada intends to emerge from its trade war with the United States as a more resilient and independent economy. In a speech at the Canada Investment Summit in Toronto, Carney said Ottawa is prepared to wait for the right conditions rather than rush into a deal with Washington.
Carney emphasized the importance of maintaining good relations with the US but also highlighted the need for Canada to protect its sovereignty. He noted that about 80% of trade between the two countries remains tariff-free, suggesting that there is still room for cooperation.
Carney's comments come as tensions between Canada and the US remain high. The US has imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian goods worth $20 billion, prompting Ottawa to retaliate. Carney also joked about the uneasy state of the relationship, referencing a ceremonial key he received from his hometown and comparing it to a box of gold keys to the White House given by President Donald Trump.
