Canada Inflation Rate Hits 3% Amid Gas Price Surge

Canada's inflation rate accelerated to 3% in July, driven by a rebound in gasoline prices due to the Middle East conflict. The consumer price index rose at a 26% yearly pace for gas, up from 21% in June, according to Statistics Canada.

The core measures of inflation remained subdued, however, with an average year-over-year increase of 1.95%. This is below the Bank of Canada's 2% target and suggests that broader inflationary pressures are still contained.

Andrew Grantham, an economist at Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, noted that there is no rush for the bank to raise interest rates due to the relatively low core inflation reading. The loonie rose against the US dollar after the release, gaining 0.2% to C$1.3853.

Despite the increase in gasoline prices, economists do not expect a significant impact on the broader economy. Robert Kavcic, senior economist at Bank of Montreal, stated that the inflation side is looking stable and well-behaved despite some heat in July.
