Statistics Canada reported that employment in Canada increased by 75,000 positions in July, marking a 0.4% rise compared to the previous month. The unemployment rate also declined by 0.1 percentage points to 6.4%. This comes as a contrast to the United States, where the economy lost 23,000 jobs in July and the unemployment rate remained steady at 4.1%.

The job gains in Canada were largely driven by strong employment growth among core-aged people (25-54 years old), with a gain of 51,000 positions. Within this age group, women experienced a significant increase of 33,000 jobs, while the unemployment rate for core-aged women fell to 5.2%.

Industry-wise, wholesale and retail trade saw an increase of 21,000 positions, while finance, insurance, real estate, rental, and leasing added 18,000 jobs. In contrast, the US economy experienced losses in local government education and retail trade, with employment continuing to trend up in healthcare.
