Canada July Inflation Rate Surges Higher Than Expected at 3.0%
Canada's inflation rate for July came in higher than expected at 3.0% year-over-year, exceeding forecasts of 2.9%. The Bank of Canada's core inflation measure also rose to 2.3%, up from 2.1% in the previous period.
The biggest contributor to the inflation increase was gasoline prices, which surged by 25.7% year-over-year, a significant jump from June's 20.5%. Travel tour prices also saw a notable increase, rising by 15.2%, likely boosted by the World Cup.
However, not all sectors showed an inflationary trend. Rent and traveller accommodation prices fell in July, with rent down 0.5% and traveller accommodation down 4.0%. Passenger vehicle purchases also declined by 0.4%.
