Canada Lands Punch on Trump with Retaliatory Tariffs
Canada has taken a bold stance against US trade bullying by imposing retaliatory tariffs on $US20 billion of US exports. This move makes Canada one of the few significant economies willing to stand up to Donald Trump's aggressive trade policies.
The tariffs are in response to similar dollar-for-dollar duties imposed by the US on Canadian exports, including autos, dairy, and metal products. Prime Minister Mark Carney had previously accepted some US demands but refused to give in to last-minute concessions, leading to the breakdown of talks.
The effective rate on US imports is now closer to 4%, up from just over 1% previously. Canada's exports to the US account for nearly 70% of its total exports, making this move a significant risk.
Despite the potential risks, Carney's willingness to stand up to Trump has drawn praise and support from Canadians. The country is also diversifying its economy by negotiating trade agreements with other countries to reduce its reliance on the US market.
