Canada Matches U.S. Tariffs with Dollar-for-Dollar Response
Canada has announced it will impose matching tariffs on U.S. goods starting September 8 in response to Washington's introduction of 50% duties on about $20 billion of Canadian exports.
The escalation threatens cross-border supply chains and could increase volatility in North American stocks and the Canadian dollar, according to a statement from Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The U.S. tariffs took effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern time on August 22 following a three-day delay and apply even to goods that meet the requirements of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.
Canadian officials said they would publish details of affected products in the coming days, including U.S. steel, dairy products, household appliances, agricultural equipment, electronics, pulp, and paper.
