Canada Offers $5.4 Billion in Support Amid US Tariff Dispute
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that his government will continue to support workers and industries affected by US tariffs. The decision comes after a meeting with union leaders, who discussed measures to protect jobs and businesses.
The prime minister described the US tariffs as 'unjustified' and 'unprovoked', putting pressure on Canadian workers and industries. To mitigate this impact, the government is providing an additional 7.5 billion Canadian dollars (~$5.4 billion) in support for affected businesses and workers.
This support comes in response to the US imposing 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods after negotiations between the countries failed. Canada has since imposed retaliatory tariffs on $20 billion worth of US goods, including steel, dairy products, appliances, and farm equipment.
