Canada Pursues EU Ties Without Compromising Sovereignty

Canada is seeking to strengthen its ties with the European Union without compromising its sovereignty. The country aims to deepen trade, investment, security, data, and labor links with the EU, which would make it closer to the bloc than any other nation. According to a senior government official, Canada wants to maintain control over its decision-making processes while increasing cooperation with the EU.

The talks are still in their exploratory stages, but the outcome could be significant for both parties. The official noted that without sacrificing autonomy, the result could be Canada's closest ties to the EU yet. This would mark a shift in Canada's transatlantic relations, as Ottawa attempts to reduce its reliance on the United States.

Canada has already taken steps to strengthen its relationship with the EU, including joining the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) initiative, which aims to help EU countries rearm by building up their weapon industries. Canada receives equivalent access to the program without having to make payments to the EEA. The country is also negotiating a digital trade agreement and collaborating on critical metals.

Former Quebec premier Jean Charest said that while Canada will never be an official member of the EU, there are ways for Canadians to grow closer to the bloc. He emphasized the importance of increased mobility for skilled European professionals, which could be invaluable in building Canada's economy. 'Whether it's France or other European countries, they represent a great pool of talent from which we can recruit,' Charest said.

The Canadian government is focusing on attracting investment and economic growth as US conflict deepens. This move recognizes that the EU countries are liberal democracies while the US has parted company with its Western allies.
