Carney Hosts Investment Summit to Woo Global Investors with 'What the World Wants'
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is hosting an investment summit in Toronto to woo global investors and pitch Canada's economy as a safe bet. The two-day event brings together over 100 top asset managers, sovereign wealth funds, and business leaders with over $72 trillion in assets under management.
The goal is to attract investment in key sectors such as energy, resources, AI, defense, transportation, and infrastructure. Carney, a former central banker, has an address book full of the world's biggest business bosses and is on first-name terms with many of them.
Carney believes Canada has what the world wants, citing its political stability and resource sectors as major selling points. However, there are concerns that lengthy project approvals in Canada may deter investors.
Experts caution that while overseas investment is crucial, encouraging domestic investment from Canada's largest pension funds is also important. Drew Fagan, a professor at the University of Toronto's Munk School of Global Affairs, notes that the challenge for Carney lies in developing and building new global trade partnerships quickly enough to offset the economic impact of the US-Canada trade war.
