Canada Seeks Strategic Partnership with India on Energy and Food Security
Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne has identified areas where his country can be a strategic partner to India. Speaking in Toronto during bilateral talks with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Champagne emphasized Canada's potential role in securing India's energy and food requirements.
Champagne highlighted the scale of India's economy and consumer market, pointing out that it is the fourth-largest economy in the world, with 1.4 billion people. He noted that Canadians will realize the significance of this demographic once they understand its economic potential.
The comments come as energy, critical minerals, and resilient supply chains emerge as key areas of economic cooperation between India and Canada. The two countries have already identified opportunities to expand energy trade, including Canadian LNG, LPG, and crude oil supplies to India, along with refined petroleum products, potash, and uranium.
The Finance Minister's Toronto visit is part of her official trip to Canada and the United States from August 25 to September 2. The inaugural Economic and Financial Dialogue will cover macroeconomic developments, financial-sector cooperation, bilateral investment opportunities, and shared international economic priorities.
