Canada Shifts Economic Focus from US to Europe Amid Trade War

Canada is shifting its economic focus from the US to Europe amid the ongoing trade war between Donald Trump's administration and several countries, including Canada. Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, will deliver a speech at the European Parliament this month, highlighting Canada's efforts to strengthen ties with the EU.

In contrast, the US president has been making angry social media posts, while changing the name of Lake Ontario, a move seen as an escalation in the trade war. Mark Camilleri, the Brussels-based president and chief executive of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Europe, said that Canada is 'building this plane as we're flying it' in its efforts to strengthen ties with the EU.

The Canadian government's decision to focus on the EU comes at a time when Canada-US trade relations are becoming increasingly tense. Foreign Minister Anita Anand met with her European counterparts in Ireland recently, and the country is planning to shift its historical southward focus of its economy.
