Japan's Budget Requests Soar to Record High

The Japanese government has submitted record-high budget requests for fiscal year 2027, exceeding 143 trillion yen or approximately $915 billion. The total request is a new high for the fourth consecutive year, driven in part by the removal of a cap on budget requests under the country's newly-launched investment framework.

The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry led the way with a request of 36.6 trillion yen or around $234 billion to address rising social security expenses. The Finance Ministry also requested nearly the same amount due to an increase in long-term interest rates that could lead to higher debt-servicing costs.

Budget requests under the new investment framework totaled over 12 trillion yen, or approximately $77 billion. However, some requests do not specify concrete amounts, which may cause the overall total to rise further.
