Canada Shifts Gears Towards Nationalism Amid Global Uncertainty

Canada is entering a new era of nationalism, former Prime Minister Stephen Harper said at the Canada Investment Summit in Toronto. The summit aimed to attract more investment into the country and reduce its reliance on the US.

Harper argued that Canada must pursue diminished reliance on the US to preserve its sovereignty. This change comes after years of comfortable strategic position shared with the world's largest economy, privileged access to the American market, and natural resources.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is also reaching a similar conclusion. His government is taking an aggressive effort to attract investment, accelerate major projects, and diversify Canada's economic relationships.

The European Union has proposed making Canada its first 'associate member', offering deeper cooperation in advanced manufacturing, defence production, Arctic security, energy, critical minerals, artificial intelligence, quantum technology, and economic security. While this is a significant moment, Canadians should be cautious and not declare victory too soon.
