Canada Stands Firm Against US Trade War with $20 Billion Tariffs
Canada has retaliated against the US trade war by imposing tariffs on over $20 billion worth of American goods, including steel, aluminum, cheese, appliances, clothing, cosmetics, and farm equipment. The tariffs, which take effect at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, cover about 6% of the $333.6 billion in US exports to Canada last year.
The move is seen as a response to the latest round of tariffs imposed by the US on Canadian goods. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said that the US demands could 'hollow out key Canadian industries and limit the country's independence.'
Despite being at a disadvantage, with the US economy roughly 13 times larger than Canada's, experts say that the Canadian government is not backing down. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly has stated that Canada will be able to show the world that it can 'win this trade war'.
