Canada Streamlines Project Approval Process Amid Economic Growth Concerns

The Canadian government is taking steps to boost economic growth and approval of major projects. The Building Canada Strong Act, introduced by Prime Minister Mark Carney, aims to streamline the federal assessment process for all major federal projects. This means that instead of having multiple levels of government and agencies reviewing each project separately, assessments, permits, and consultations will be done simultaneously within a single year.

The legislation also allows the government to designate Regions of National Interest, which will enable regional assessments in advance of proposed projects. This could further reduce waiting times for approvals.

Carney's move is seen as a response to the lengthy review process that has plagued major projects in Canada. The Impact Assessment Act introduced during the Trudeau years created overlapping federal review and permitting processes that can take five years or more to complete. Carney believes this needs to change if Canada wants to build its economy and diversify trade and investment.
