Canada Summit Secures $500 Billion in New Investment
At the Canada Investment Summit in Toronto on September 15, 2026, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that nearly $500 billion in new investment has been committed. The federal government is seeking private investments to operate the country's four largest airports: Toronto Pearson, Vancouver International, Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International, and Calgary International.
The capital raised will be used to reinvest in other priorities. 'Canadian pension funds already invest successfully in many airports around the world,' Carney said. 'It is time to bring that same expertise home to more directly benefit all Canadians.'
The government also made a major tax announcement, expanding a tax write-off program for capital investment. The productivity super-deduction will now be increased to over 65% of assets, including fibre-optic cable, mining property, and oil and gas pipelines.
This change reduces the marginal effective tax rate on new business investment to 6.4%, the lowest in any major economy worldwide. Royal Bank of Canada chief executive Dave McKay called the move 'very consequential.' He stated that there is a renewed interest in Canada due to consistency between government messages and CEOs.
