Canada Targets Israeli Settlements With Trade Restrictions

Canada's government has announced its intention to impose restrictions on trade with Israeli settlements, following in the footsteps of several European countries. This decision marks a significant step towards aligning Canadian policy with international law, particularly the 2024 Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which deemed Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories illegal.

The ICJ opinion stated that states like Canada have an obligation to restructure their economic relations with Israel to prevent contributing to its illegal presence in occupied Palestine. While a ban on trade with settlements is a step in the right direction, experts believe it may not go far enough to meet all of Canada's legal obligations.

CJPME, a Canadian organization that advocates for Palestinian rights, emphasizes that a comprehensive ban on trade with services, investment, and property is necessary to effectively target economic and political aspects of Israel's state and economy that facilitate the occupation. The group also notes that the effectiveness of Canada's trade ban will depend on its willingness to enforce it.
