Canada Unlocks New Clean Power and Transmission with Churchill Falls Deal
The Canadian government has announced an agreement between Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, and itself to unlock new clean power and transmission in Canada's economy. This deal is a major step towards meeting the Prime Minister's commitment to doubling the size of Canada's electricity grids and electrifying more of the national economy.
Rick Smith, President of the Canadian Climate Institute, praised the agreement, stating that it demonstrates the level of ambition needed to reach Canada's goal. He noted that this is the scale of clean energy ambition necessary across the country to meet the Prime Minister's commitment.
The new agreement will bring much-needed investment certainty for the Churchill Falls and Gull Island hydroprojects and spur substantial new onshore wind power projects in Newfoundland and Labrador. It will also improve energy security and affordability, while driving down emissions.
